The Colombarone oasis

A place of peace and serenity immersed in nature: this is the oasis of Colombarone, an important wetland of almost 50 hectares located on the Secchia riverbanks. This area has been classified Site of Community Importance. The reserve shelters a rich avian fauna that includes wild ducks, coots, moorhens, grey herons, night herons, egrets, great crested grebes, little grebes and rarer species such as the bittern. There is a significant population of European pond turtles, an endangered species and the sole Italian native fresh water turtle specimens. Adding further biodiversity, you will also find reptiles and amphibians.

The oasis is the access point to the Secchia Nature Route, a 33 km bike and pedestrian route connecting Modena to Castellarano (Reggio Emilia).

Within the end of 2015, the canal supplying the wetland basin, seriously damaged by the overflow of the Fossa di Spezzano stream in 2014, will be brought back into use by the Maintenance Department of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Basin.
